Sam Gwynn's "Fried Beauty" appears in Ted Kooser's newspaper column, American Life in Poetry. Check it out.

Another cool confection by the chef. After this and "American Crusts," I'm starting to think that hunger inspires Gwynn.

I love the title, and I just knew there had to be green tomatoes in there somewhere. I first ate fried green tomatoes four years ago in Nashville. I had recently seen the movie. I ordered the dish with some trepidation, but I was pleasantly surprised, and so filled I could scarcely face my catfish.

It's a masterpiece. There has to be a food-verse collection in the oven.

My God! I just got back from visiting my parents in Arkansas, floating through that world of deep-fried things my mother so capably makes. Thanks to Sam for celebrating them.

Julie, in spirit perhaps, but it was written long before I visited Natchitoches. Beaumont deep-fries as well.
