well, i think fog is one of the two best poems sandburg wrote. you should be familiar with it, but for those who arent'.
Fog
The fog comes
on little cat feet.
It sits looking
over harbor and city
on silent haunches
and then moves on.
ah, isn't it just a wonderful poem. only one better, in my opinion, is 'chicago'

The first two lines? Yes. The rest? Well, pretty darn bland, don't you think? A "cat" fog doing nothing more than sitting and then moving on?
Of course, I'm from the more is more school of poetry. Minimalism, whatever form it takes, just isn't me.

well then you must be a big fan of sandburg, because he tends to run on and on and on.
i think this is a great image. i can see the cat-fog sitting there looking over what's going on and then moving on. i had a cat who would do that. he's gone now. i have to say he was the only cat i've ever really like.
but to each his own. since nobody really posts here i thought i would. i've got other poems and poets.

Hello!
I haven't read this for years. Seeing it again, I wonder what noisy haunches would be? Is "silent" really the right word?

noisy haunches, wouldn't that be similar to an elephant or a human walking through the woods vs a cat. i think that this is a very effective poem. no wasted words. but as i said above, to each his own.

This is so bad I thought I would see if I could make it even worse. I succeeded three times, though just barely:
The fog comes
on thick pig feet.
It sits looking
over harbor and city
on muddy haunches
and then rolls off.
**
The fog comes
on ballerina toes.
It pirouettes
over harbor and city,
leaps from skinny haunches
and then moves on.
*
The cat comes
like fog.
It sits like mist
over harbor and city
then with silent haunches
moves on.

Haven't quite made up my mind on Frost's poem. One of those poems where ya kinda gotta be in the mood, I'd say. I have made up my mind on yours though, Mr Slater. Ha! Love those ballerina toes!
Actually, it's quite strange running into this thread just now. One of the topics at lunch today was fog; folks who used to live on the mainland recalling how school would be called off due to heavy fog.
We don't get too much fog here, but we do get "vog" (a volcanic haze) that settles in when the trade winds aren't cookin'.
Y'know I'm pretty positive that I can write a worse poem than you, Roger! Let's see here---
___
The vog comes
on little bat wings;
hangs, looking over
the a'a, pahoehoe.
Hunches and stretches.
Then it moves on.
___
Yep.
Far worse.
