Malaise--rhymes with "mayonnaise" and "spays" or "pez" and "fez"?

The British/European me would opt for the first pronunciation. I'd guess you'd get more votes for the second option from people from the USA(?)

Both 'malaise' and 'mayonaise' rhyme with either 'spays' or 'fez' according to the way in which you wish to pronounce them. The 'ez' version is essentially French, as is the orthography and etymology. Yer pays yer money and yer takes yer choice.

I happen to prefer the Frenchified version, -ez. Still, the online Merriam-Webster gives the -ayz version first, and I figure they have reasons.

No one says
it rhymes with fez,
at least not nowadays.

Who'd say, "Pass
the mayonnez"
instead of mayonnaise?

I'm with Roger. I sometimes rhyme it with "fez", with a touch of irony, when serving customers at an Upper West Side brasserie. And, Maryann, that pronunciation is not "Frenchified", as it is a French word. Our pronunciation is "Americanized". (Smiley face)

In these lazy days
of my crazy malaise
I live on sea-weed
served with mayonnaise.

In Oz or Uk, I've never heard anything but -aze for either.
