Petrarch records that he first saw Laura on Good Friday, April 6th, 1327--which will be exactly 680 years ago this Friday.

The Translation Board invites you to celebrate by posting a poem on our Petrarch anniversary thread. It need not be a sonnet or a translation (though it can be)-- any form is welcome, as long as it is in the Petrarchan spirit!

Please come join us. Look forward to seeing you there!

Marion,

Heard the Translation board is doing something Petrarch-related, but I'm having trouble finding the specs...

Ummm... Marion...

I was being gently ironic. You've got it advertised all over the place.

Best,

Quincy

I believe Laura's first words to Petrarch were, "Are you the man who has been littering the streets with that poster?"

Quincy,

Duh! I'm a little dense sometimes. BBB!

Michael,

Her words, which he quotes in an obscure work, are:

"Chi e quel pazzo chi sparge questi cartelloni..."
(who is this nut who's scattering these posters around?)

sparge (from spargere - to scatter, spread) may be an indirect allusion to the name he gives his collection--"Rime Sparse" (Scattered Verse)-- in Sonnet 1.

I didn't know you were such a Petrarchan scholar!

Marion
