Prairie Home Companion is having a Spring Lyric Contest. Go to www.prairiehome.org to read rules and find the online submission form. The poem/song lyric must contain reference to spring, must be original, must be submitted by 28 March 2007 at midnight CST. Minimum length is 14 lines (Garrison wouldn't be looking for sonnets, would he?) and each person may submit only one poem. No entry fee. The rules did not disqualify poems that have appeared in print, but the rules did say PHC wants rights to publish the poems in print or the Net, so best send work to which you own the rights. The Grand Prize is a Select Comfort bed and three dozen roses and I'm assuming the winning poem gets read on the air. There will be runners up; the guidelines weren't clear about whether or not poems aside from the Grand Prize winner would be read. But, hey, it will be a hoot and your chance to win more glory for yourself and the Eratosphere!

Good luck, everybody!

Lee

Just when I move to a part of the globe that has no spring. Darn it.

Hi, Janet. Darn! I was thinking how nice it was that the contest was online so that Spherians from all parts of the globe could play. I mean, I sort of have an idea what kind of poem Garrison is going to be looking for as the Grand Prize winner--and what I might or might not get finished in time to enter is not that caliber--but if he gets lots of good poems he might read runners-up on air. I think it would be really cool if you wrote a poem about there being no spring in your part of Australia and remembering what spring was like other places. "What We Get in (Location in Australia) in Place of Spring." (I grew up in Florida, so I know what you are talking about.) He's looking for good work and I would think the fresher the slant the better. Australia is pretty fresh to us here in the American Midwest! Or grab one of your poems to which you own the rights out of the oldies but goodies pile.

Come on, Janet, have a go!

Lee

Janet--start with Chaucer, "Whan that Aprille with its shouwers soote" and work your way up to "Oh to be in England now that Spring is here." Poetry will provide you with a virtual spring.

David,
I once gave the first non-American performance of a setting of those words by the American composer, Lester Trimble. It still makes me laugh.

Yes Lee and David, that's a terrific idea. My best springs were in New Zealand. London was too wet and sludgy.

Thanks from me, too, Lee. I sent one in also. A long shot, of course, but it was fun and free!

Did I read the guidelines wrong or must one be an American resident to participate?

Crap! I would swear the business about US citizenship was not there a week ago, but I did not print the guidelines last week, so can't say for sure. They may have gotten international entries and revised the rules, or I may just have spaced it, and if that is so, I apologize. Thanks, Catherine, for bringing the US citizenship to our attention. Sorry, Janet--but at least now you don't have to worry about getting the bed!

Best,
Lee
