It probably shows how utterly caprcious the whole process of getting recognition can be, especially for poetry. When there is so little space given to poetry, it becomes especially easy to see that there's no rhyme nor reason, as 'twere, to what gets attention and what doesn't. Well, I suppose there IS some sense to it: Most poetry isn't promoted by the publishers at all, so if someone puts a few bucks behind a book, and if the author has a little name recognition, lists of "Notable Books" are more likely to include it. That's how a writing career gains what they "momentum."
