Gloat, gloat, gloat...
...because I scored big-time today at a used book store.
I picked up a SIGNED first edition of Richard Wilbur's More Opposites for four dollars, a first edition of Karl Shapiro's The Bourgeois Poet for twelve dollars, a first edition of Ogden Nash's The Primrose Path for eight dollars, a first edition of Linda Pastan's Carnival Evening: New and Selected Poems 1968-1998 for twelve dollars, and a hardcover fourth edition of W.H. Auden's The Shield of Achilles for fifteen dollars.
I started trying to pick up books like these thirty years ago, and slowly raised my cash limit from one dollar to fifteen. I've picked up some great stuff dating back to the mid-nineteenth century, but in recent years most places have caught on to people like me and jacked up the prices beyond my limit.
The very nice proprietor of this store winced when she saw what she was selling the Wilbur for.

Would you mind sharing the name of this bookstore?
Of course you would...
Good finds, yes!

Kinda embarassing--I don't remember the name and I didn't get a receipt. I'm not holding out on you, though. It's in Georgetown in DC just off of Wisconsin Avenue around Q Street.

Oh, that's probably Lantern Bryn Mawr Books. I meant to visit that bookshop in the summer, but wound up at Second Story books near Dupont Circle instead.
I'll be moving to D.C. in the next two or three months though, and look forward to visiting Lantern Bryn Mawr when I'm there.

Yes, yes, that was it: "Lantern." And I've been haunting Second Story Books intermittently since 1978. It's probably the best used book store in the country.

It's great to know that someone is out there ACTIVELY BUYING POETRY, and also that great bargains on first editions can still occasionally be found!
