I think you need to make some kind of weighting between 1st, 2nd and 3rd choices, Tim, to give a reasonable result. 'Finale' would be my 3rd choice; I don't have the courage to name my 1st and 2nd. The men may be doing badly, but the Brits seem to be doing well. Didn't you say, by the way, that the bakeoff is not a competition? Best, David

It is not a competition, but a party, David. All we're doing here is electing the prom queen, or so it appears. As I said above, first vote counts three, second two, and third one, so I'll adjust your two votes for Finale to one. Wilbur is not going to pick a winner but share his impressions of the six sonnets Rose sent him.

1. Fist 2. Barcelona 3. CaravelThese are gut-feel picks, based on how well I "connected with" the poem and felt the impact of its images and language. Another excellent bake-off. John

In anticipation that Rose will have Dick's comments on the Six tomorrow, we'll close the polls at 9:00 PM CDT tonight. My thanks to all of you with purple painted thumbs. At 6:00 AM Dead Sea Mud has built an insuperable lead with 44. Finale 27, Barcelona 22, Caravel and Fist 21 each, Art 19, Conductivity 18, and Food 16.This has been great fun, fascinating to see the wide divergence of opinion of so many close readers of such a broad selection of sonnets. Alan feels the field of contestants rivals last year's very good crop, and I'll second that. When we're all done, I'm going to re-weight all ballots according to my own estimation of each voter's critical acuity, and Conductivity will win.

Tim, One part of me wanted "Conductivity" to win because it is beautiful and big and luminous. To my own surprise the poems which twisted my arm were fallible and human and eccentric.I would have loved "Food" to be first too because it is heartbreaking and earthy and tragic and brave. I would have loved "Caravel" to be first because it is beautifully constructed and saintly. I would have loved "Fist" to win because it is so taut and strong. Part of me agrees entirely with Peter Richards. It's cruel and impossible.

Janet, you said: quote:

I felt exactly the same, though I didn't vote for it.

Janet and Alexander, I read it to Rhina yesterday and she said "What a breathtakingly beautiful sonnet!" I think she'll read them all today and at least cast a ballot. Having done five of the seven screenings, which involved reading perhaps five hundred sonnets, I come at this inured to making snap decisions. Last year Maryann put together a file of all the finalists, and I'll ask her to expand it with this year's group and post it when we're done. I honestly think it's at least as good as U Evansville's Sonnet Anthology, which consists of all Bill Baer's Nemerov poems and the best sonnets from the twelve years of The Formalist. Keep in mind though, that the sonnet represents only a slim fraction of the best work at the Sphere. This is a humbling place to hang out.

Why does that make me think of ´Tammany Hall". Edited in to say: The key phrase here is "When we're all done"!

For the same reason it makes me glad I didn't vote in the first place. It does pose the question, though, will Florida and Michigan be counted or not? [This message has been edited by Laura Heidy-Halberstein (edited May 11, 2008).]

Tim, I too flinched when I read that you planned to reweight the ballots so that your own choice would win. It reminded me ofAnimal Farm, in which all animals were equal but some were more equal than others. Ugh. If it is not a competition, why rig it?Susan

Susan and Lo,It was a joke! Tim knows we'd beat him senseless if he did that. Lo, please vote. I'm curious to know which one(s) you liked best. (The (s) is there in case you're so crabby you can't find more than one sonnet to like in this terrific batch. ;-)

Cheeses, Susan and Lo. Did you give up humor for Pentecost? If this were Tammany Hall, Kavanagh, Yeats, Moore, Macneice, Kinsella, Clarke and Fallon would all be using the passwords I just got them to vote. --Boss Tweed

Like Kate, I didn't see voltas in some of my favorites, so in some cases, I'm going to have to vote for my favorite poems, rather than the best sonnets. 1. Food (from title to couplet, just wonderful) 2. Conductivity (I forgive it its awful title) 3. Three-way tie: Art, Fist, Mud

Hard for me to add this high, but our final count appears to be Dead Sea Mud 45, Finale 28, Barcelona 25, Fist 23, Caravel 21, Art 20, Conductivity 20, Food 19, and many honorable mentions for everyone else. Looking only at first place votes, Mud still runs away with 10, Fist garnered 5, and Barcelona, Food, and Art received 4 apiece. Congratulations, and now let's see what Mr. Wilbur thinks. Thanks so much to everyone involved in the Bake-Off. Tim, I've said re previous Bake-Offs that I don't think the event should be regarded as a contest, but as a celebration of the modern sonnet. And that's what Rose gave us, with a wide-ranging selection of sonnets. Of course, there was a wide range of opinion in the comments, which made for interesting discussions. I felt honoured just to have my work included in the Bake-Off in the first place, and surprised and delighted that people voted for my sonnet (despite the lousy enjambments ) Reading the other sonnets, I felt that, while some appealed to me more than others, they were all clearly written by very skilled poets--and this is quite unusual in any collection of poems--not one of them bored me in the slightest. So many thanks again to all involved this year's Bake-Off, and I'm already looking forward to the next one. Regards, Maz

My dear Maz, sall we go a-hawking? From my first rapturously exculpatory, enthusiastic post to my last, hedged round with caveats, you can trace how the poem shrank on me. Blame it on our EfH who was much tougher in private than in print. Yes, folks, that's possible!Honestly, my congratulations for a crowd pleaser, but I'd rather go hunting with you.
