A drip of latex paint escaped the groove
of letters faintly carved in weathered wood.
I filled in with a brush what time removed,
disguising signs of her long widowhood.

She'd asked me to restore the faded names
there on the doorway plaque, her souvenir.
"The Martins: Tom and Joan", it still proclaims;
it's kept his presence close, for eighteen years.
