Tired of the thinking and rethinking,
Of wondering what the ones around us think,
Tired of the meticulous work of making sense
Of images that shine through all the panes
Too intensely for the kind of transformation
We’ve grown to feel will always be a must,
We seek a place where we will always be
Waking into a new reality,
In a town in West Virginia (Beckley, say,
Or Clarksburg), where rising at 6 we find
The mirrors filled with new things (unconnected
To any place that’s made us who we are)
And shower, dress, gather our belongings,
Eat at a diner across the divided highway,
And drive in early morning through a landscape
Where mists in the valleys won’t burn off till noon.
