Ode to a Pigeon

The hummingbird sips nectar from a flower;
The goldfinch dines on dainty thistle seeds.
But I have seen you happily devour
A day-old bagel you found in the weeds.
The parrot shines in blue and green and yellow;
The robin is applauded when he sings.
In bruised gray, you’re an unassuming fellow,
And no one listens when you flap your wings.
The swan may grace a wedding invitation;
The chickadee adorns a Christmas card.
But you haunt Central Park and Union Station
And peck at crumbs on Sunset Boulevard.
Though in your club there’s not a single fan,
Still I salute you, feathered Everyman.
