About Writing
In another attempt to identify the source,
the old hurt is unearthed, the shards exposed
to the contemporary air; as an archaeologist
patiently brushes, measures, guesses, we lift
the artifact from the soil of forgetfulness,
classifying the find, labeling it, putting it
on display for incurious eyes; a cryptic pattern
reassembles, this buckle, this button, this bed mat,
a broken flute, the skull of a man, the hand
of a woman, unfleshed; almost, but never quite,
we recreate the lost moment when the whole
was greater than the sum of its fractured parts.
