Mammalian Marginalia

by Gail White

The Nutria

The nutria has orange teeth
And fur on top and underneath.
The awful stuff it likes to eat
Requires lots of Nutra-Sweet.

The Aye-Aye

Nocturnal lemurs specialize
In large appealing wistful eyes.
They get away with stealing fruit
By being terminally cute.

The Takin

The takin on Tibetan slopes
Is kin to goats and antelopes.
He’s woolly, ruminant, and white,
And doesn’t look extremely bright.

The Bandicoot

The bandicoot’s a very small
Herbivorous marsupial
That fits into a coffee cup.
(I swear I didn’t make him up.)
