Wristwatch after Charles Simic

This is time’s gaudy manacle, gang token
of the chained,
of those indentured until death
like the crew on a train, the bridge out ahead.

Yet we, like model prisoners, clasp them
gladly to our arms, telling stories
and singing as we march,
making large, easy gestures with our only free hands.
