Gatekeepers

by David G. Anthony

His spaniel rushed to greet him when he died.
They found a golden gate marked Heaven, where
a Seraph said, “Dogs aren’t allowed in there—
they have no souls—but you may go inside.”
He thought a moment, turned and walked away.
They reached a gate, marked Heaven once again:
there, angels looked like ordinary men
and showed them where a lovely city lay,
explaining that the other place was Hell.
“Aren’t you concerned,” he asked, “when they proclaim
such falsehoods, misappropriate your name,
and try to steal your people’s souls as well?”
“No, not at all; no cause for us to mind:
they take the folk who’d leave their friends behind.”
