The Lawyers’ Dance

by Taylor Graham

The plaintiff’s lawyer offers a complaint.
His partner on the other side (a saint
of charity for the oppressed) bows deep.

Their clients samba sleepless in their sleep,
they dream of dollars dancing out the door.

The steps are intricate out on the floor.
The Legal Waltz goes on, its costs are steep,
as you can bet attorneys don’t dance cheap.

Taylor Graham is a volunteer search-and-rescue dog handler in the Sierra Nevada, and also helps her husband (a retired wildlife biologist) with his field projects.   Her latest book, The Downstairs Dance Floor (Texas Review Press, 2006), won the Robert Phillips Poetry Chapbook Prize.
