I was pleased to see that Rob Mackenzie, in his review of Robin Robertson´s versions of 15 poems by Tomas Tranströmer (“The Deleted World”) admires the poetry of Tranströmer. I share his admiration, and over the past 35 years, on and off, I have been trying to make English translations of the Swedish originals. My complete translations were published in Britain by Bloodaxe Books, as “New Collected Poems,” and an American version has just come from New Directions, with the title “The Great Enigma.”

Mr. Mackenzie´s assessment does not touch upon the puzzling nature of Robertson´s project. Too many of Robertson´s lines, in 9 of the 15 poems between 50% and 60+% of the poem, are identical to mine. Elsewhere he makes arbitrary and pointless changes to the Swedish, a language he does not seem to understand. And then he has presented the results as in some way his original poems. His versions are neither reliable translations nor independent imitations.

A note of mine amplifying on these remarks will appear, in the next issue of “Modern Poetry in Translation” (Oxford).
