David Graham

lives in Ripon, Wisconsin, where he is a professor of English at Ripon College.

He has published two full-length books and four chapbooks, most recently Stutter Monk (Flume Press). With Kate Sontag, he co-edited the essay anthology After Confession: Poetry as Autobiography (Graywolf Press).  Poems, essays, and reviews have appeared widely, in print and online, most recently in TriQuarterly, Salt River Review and qarrtsiluni.

He also maintains an online Poetry Library.

Briefly at Midnight

My spaniel noses into midnight breeze,
his sweet body tense, alert:
we are not alone. There are messages
on the air I cannot read, dusk rabbit,
noon cat, just as he cannot decipher
the constellations, and neither he nor I
understands the leash that holds us.

Orion, Ursa Major, Polaris
preside over both bewilderment and peace,
squirrel nest, juniper hedge, walnut husk
fragrant in dewy grass. We are not alone.
