What do you have to show for yourself?
Dedicated to those of us who are nearing thirty and have yet to marry or procreate.
You like to pick your nose.
You know you do. Don’t deny it.
You like to journey into the cavernous
parts of your body and explore,
and better if you bring back
memorabilia from the trip.
Hard crusty bust of Jesus,
solid yellow paperweight dislodged
from the ear, shiny eye gems plucked
out from sleep, months old lint lifted
from creases in the belly button.
Yes! Belly button lint does exist,
and you have evidence to prove it.
You examine it too. Measure its size.
Not with rulers or scales,
but against the tip of your finger.
And you feel accomplished.
Don’t deny it. You know you do.
You’ve been able to do what’s evaded you
most of your adult life.
You produced something to be proud of.
