Approaching Salt Lake City from the East

All wild and always wary,
we drove, when newly wed,
a thousand miles of prairie,
the Wasatch dead ahead.

December was September,
and March already May,
the past a haunted ember
abandoned by the way.

Through chalk-dead no-man’s-lands
we walked the rasping shale
and touched the pale pink bands
along a bone-strewn trail.
