The New Recruits

The "big box" near my house sells
pink camo togs for little girls.
In my dark visions,
pre-teens slog through the desert
in Little Mermaid combat boots,
carrying Hello Kitty walkie-talkies.
Preening like Jessica and Britney,
they load their M-16s
and toss their shiny hair.
When their jeep is attacked,
they scream like they did
when their mothers took them
to see Matchbox Twenty
and let them buy official concert Ts.
Soon they are covered with sand,
their screams muffled by blasts,
until a glittery white phosphorescence
is all that's left of them.
