Sound Byte

We celebrate the small, compact and quick,
the things that fit inside our palm and mind,
the things we can manipulate and stick
inside a pocket, use when we’re inclined.

We like the bottom line, the simple answer,
the how-to books and seminars with charts,
we want to know which food prevents which cancer,
which Mozart rondo makes our fetus smart.

We want to pack it up, to leave it there,
to leave a check-mark in the box, to leave
the conversation with a word or phrase
that sums it up and sets it right, that leaves
us feeling sure, secure, and much less bare,
untroubled by what lurks inside the haze.

The “Trust-Fall”

To stand, at nine years old, alone
and trembling on a wooden ledge,
turned backwards, heels over the edge,
eyes in a blindfold—to hear the drone
of fellow campers down below
assuring they will make the catch—
to feel solidity detach,
to bend to gravity, let go.
