This is simply a matter of not supporting a journal whose publisher has publicly praised a man whose comments I find sickening and disturbing in the extreme. I think we should boycott said journal and any others that encourage racism, sexism, and violence toward political opponents. You may read the New York Times on this matter:

Thanks, Sam.

Agreed. And if we feel this way about a journal, how shall we react to our government's current administration when it aligns itself with Bolsonaro? See: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...-latin-america, in which U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton says: “The recent elections of like-minded leaders in key countries, including Ivan Duque in Colombia, and last weekend Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil, are positive signs for the future of the region..."

Like-minded.

Pardon my Latin: Quod est in poetica ita est in rei publicae.

I think this article expresses the situation well:

I hate to trot out the McCarthyite phrase "fellow traveler," but if one doesn't take a stand against Kimball and his magazine one might as well be an active supporter of it.

Martin,

Thank you for sharing this. It's why I think there is little reason to engage with a person who still supports Trump. The great tragedy of the free exchange of ideas is that those who do not come in good faith--fascists--are always able to use a society's norms against it. In some cases, so well that they take over. In others, in the States, for instance, they've been growing and operating since the early 1980s at least. Really, an element of it has been around since Reconstruction.

[Sorry, better done by PM, I think.]

R. S. Gwynn 11-05-2018 03:09 PM

David Rosenthal, I have done all a citizen can do, and I trust you have done the same. I seriously doubt that we will get everything we want this time around.

I understand where you are coming from, and, further, I think there are those supporters for whom it may indeed prove futile to engage. Yet Beto O’Rourke and others like Conor Lam are forging effective ways by which to address the other side, at least a considerable segment thereof, that rather gets through than alienates. For instance, Beto, should not be running so close against Cruz in a state as deeply red as Texas; he was told by some fellow Democrats that his campaign in the red, red heart of Texas is irrational, that he was wasting his time talking to ‘these people.’ See his explanation as to such unlikely converts in this interview. Here is an article with more from the New York Times: For Beto O’Rourke, a Road to Victory Winds Through Rural East Texas.
