Here he is performing some of his poems:
http://spoken-gems.com/2009/06/16/fe...-consequences/ Good voice for performing, his tendency to shout is a bit irritating at times, and more so as he goes on - I was relieved when it got to the end. His humor, easy sentiment and hammy performance glosses over the weaknesses in his poems I think, perhaps best heard for entertainment value than critically read. His language is a bit archaic here and there, rhymes are frequently the familiar, easy, over-used; certainly not shy of rhyme driven and cliche phrases. |
Steve,
That isn't exactly his best performance; I think he may have calmed down a bit now, unless he was just doing his 'ranting' poems then. He didn't shout at all on Friday night. Archaisms, clichés, rhyme-driven - I agree with you, and I'm not hailing him as the best thing since sliced bread, to employ an over-used cliché (and what was the best thing before sliced bread?) but he's very entertaining - and some of his poems are wonderful. All of his books are beautifully illustrated, too. I've been to some dire poetry readings in both London and L.A. - but, as I mentioned before, Felix's shows are well worth going to. No-one leaves the place disappointed. |
