I haven't read the King story, but it seems to me that a large part of the horror in the Poe is the ambiguity of Fortunato's crimes. Whatever they are, it's pretty clear he didn't murder Montressor's wife. I can't say I see much of a point of writing a version in which the reader cheers for the guy doing the killing.
