Man of Property, short, with a hunch, smokes and drinks and likes bottles to munch, requires a young virgin to staunch sexual urging. Bed & Breakfast but bring your own lunch.

Yup, the apathy one is our best I reckon.
And I've discovered Quilp doesn't eat bottles. He eats eggshells. By the way, anyone discovered what he actually wants to DO to Little Nell? S & M? Oh, and how old is she? Eleven? Twelve? I think Dickens is on the edge here. Eleven or twelve-year-old prostitutes were common in Victorian London. As they are in Modern Bangkok I'm told. Heavens it doesn't bear thinking about, does it? |

John, Nell's brother tells Dick Swiveller that she's "nearly fourteen" - the same age as Juliet.
No, it's never clear exactly what Quilp intends to do to her. It's one of Dickens's most puzzling plots. Quilp is a great villain but we never really find out what the purpose of his villainy actually is. Still, the descriptions of his meals are terrific: not only eggshells but also gigantic prawns "with the heads and tails on" and boiling liquor, like the rioters in Barnaby Rudge. |
