If the photo's misleading context had been pointed out discreetly, by PM to John, how many of us might have innocently circulated the inaccuracy?

Better that we all know that reference to the photo could blow up in our faces.

John's cri de cœur about the political climate in which those deaccessioned school library books will be replaced remains honest and painfully beautiful—even if initially prompted by incomplete context for the photo that hit him in the solar plexus.

I suppose I was imagining a situation where John could then start a second post with "It has been brought to my attention...", rather than having his original post so publicly debunked.
