but lose my radiance when I fall,
cut and hauled by you to go

into your home’s festivity,
there dressed with gold and tinsel trims.
I also hail nativity—
but false stars light my dying limbs.

By making me a tawdry Yule tree,
you desecrate new light’s true beauty.

Most Christmas trees are still grown here,
but fakes are Made in China
for those of us who won’t kill life
to fête a faux messiah.
