No catching intended, MJ :-) I was just wondering whether you'd thought along the lines of poetry accompanying music. I'll have to listen to the prelude at some stage. That's an interesting question you have there :-)
Best wishes, Fliss |
So, the Kindertotenlieder, on which, Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kindertotenlieder
Another vote for the saddest music ever recorded might be Jackson Frank's "Blues Run the Game": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4it9vK6G7o Well, the sadness is there in every line he sings, but for some back story, again Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackson_C._Frank His one album was produced by Paul Simon, and S & G recorded the hit off it. Cheers, John |
Oh dear, John.
I actually can't listen to Ravel's 'Pavane pour une infante défunte', so I don't think I could cope with the Kindertotenlieder :-/ I've just remembered a time when I was working at a law firm and a pleasant fellow secretary would give me a lift home when I was particularly poorly. During one such journey, I think she put on something in which John Betjeman was performing his poems to music. Does that sound likely? Best wishes, Fliss |
Betjeman's Banana Blush? Pretty much every track is a little piece of wonder. Set to music by Jim Parker. I think it's probably too easy to dismiss Betjeman as a smug and silly man but I find these songs genuinely touching.

The Kindertotenlieder have a tremendously sad back story, as does Frank's "Blues Run the Game." Here OTOH is "Celebration," by Kool and the Gang: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GwjfUFyY6M

Yes, it was that, Joe; thanks! I couldn't work out where to start looking. Back then, Sally was in her 60s, I was early 20s, and we both really enjoyed it <(:-)
- - - John, thanks for 'Celebration'; love it! Party hat on again, I think <(:-) I just mentioned Texas Pete to you; here's the theme music to SuperTed! Yes, I am dancing and singing along: Suuuu-per-Tedddd... SuperTed! |
SuperTed is fab! Thank you for sharing him with us, Fliss. Here in return are the Mighty Mouse theme (courtesy of Andy Kaufman): https://www.dailymotion.com/video/xi2h1n
and also the Underdog theme song, one of my own favorites: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pa1fH0SvGPg Cheers, John |
Wow, this thread is still amazing, and hugely eclectic.
I can say for certain that last night was a Bach with Robert Hass night (mint tea, nearly Pimms but not quite). John and Fliss, I see SuperTed and Underdog and raise you one Pink Panther - https://youtu.be/HhHwnrlZRus Sarah-Jane |
Shriek! Mighty Mouse! Underdog! Pink Panther!
Fliss is overcome and lies down for a while. Another favourite here, lol. |
Man, the Thunderbirds theme is not available in my country! I've not thought of that in donkey's years, as they say. How is Lady Penelope anyway?
Sarah-Jane, I especially like the tango in those credits - very nice! I never saw the Steve Martin, but I ought to, since I think he's a fantastic physical comic and Jean Reno is always brilliant. You have inspired me. :-) Cheers, John |
