and perhaps the Borges, too, for that matter . . . .
except that one's still a samizdat version. |

No, Brian. It appears to be a rare book.

Frank, Gregory, Tim,
We need one of you to choose a Hardy and put it on the list, giving it a number! Best, T |
15. Modern European Poetry, edited by Willis Barnstone
Well, folks, I'm breaking out of the box set by single-author posts and suggesting an anthology by my pop, and not just because it was by my pop but because so many different people have told me that it was the book that opened up the world of poetry to them, as it did to me. Long out of print, it first appeared in 1966, and included poets such as Apollinaire, Reverdy, Eluard, Desnos, Follain, Rilke, Trakl, Brecht, Celan, Kazantzakis, Ritsos, Elytis, Campana, Ungaretti, Montale, Pavese, Blok, Mayakofsky, Mandelshtam, Akhmatova, Pasternak, Machado, Salinas, Vallejo, Aliexandre, Guillen, Alberti, Neruda, Hernandez, and so many more. The translations are wonderful, as are the selections, and unlike so many of the international poetry anthologies that have followed the selections are very large (10-15 poems per poet is not unusual) so that you can actually get to know the poet by more than a "greatest hits" of 2 or 3 poems.

It must be a BIG book, Tony. How do you lift it?

16. Thomas Hardy, Satires of Circumstance
I second Gregory's choice and assist him (I hope) by putting it in the proper format for this list. I also second his explanation for his choice. There are editions of this as a single book at Amazon US; for instance: http://www.amazon.com/Satires-Circum...f+circumstance) You may prefer to find these poems instead in James Gibson's Thomas Hardy: The Complete Poems: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss...ripbooks%2C335 |

I am loving this thread, and can imagine the result as an excellent to do list for me. But folks really should title their posts in the way Tony suggests -- it makes things easier. David R. |
Hi David,
Oh, yes, the rules say, if you must do so you can nominate up to two books! |
