F. Scott Fitzgerald's short story collection Tales of the Jazz Age was published in 1922, so jazz couldn't have been too foreign a concept.

Hmm. Things trend quicker than I give them credit for trending. Here's a commemoration of the first jazz single ever issued, in 1917:

Update: Louis Armstrong was playing jazz on Mississippi riverboats in 1919.
