from the woods will rarely stray.

The chimpanzee,
unlike you and me,
is not an urban dweller.
He is a woodland feller.

The mountain gorilla
might enjoy a glass of sarsaparilla,
since the creature is a vegetarian.
Though the silverback is a bit of a disciplinarian.

Echidna puggles
have their struggles
because they're born so tiny
their mothers' struggles are because the puggles grow so spiny

The finch,
in a pinch,
now and again
will stand in for a wren.

The tufted titmouse
will not grouse
or complain about cold weather,
being all afeather.*

*NB this last word is not in the dictionary.
I sometimes say the same of gullible, to surprise the unwary.

A cormorant
will storm or rant
if it dives beneath the sea
and then resurfaces fishlessly.

Will my goat
float?
I wonder, will he? . . .
I guess not. Glug! I'll miss you, Billy.

The buffalo or bison
appears on the horizon
in numbers less immense
than in the days people lived out there in tents.

The hippopotamus
is pogonotomous;
it would be scarier
hairier.

The arroyo toad,
when horny, will unload
non-stop falsetto farts. Since it won't desist,
it's on the IUCN endangered list.

The Creature from the Black Lagoon
would swoon
if Julia Adams loved it back.
But she does not, alack!
