Not a big Gostling fan~ like to see him get into an uncomfortable role. But I haven't seen the movie, and reading first couple of paragraphs from wiki, am sincerely interested. I thought Dunkirk was a little bland. It was, I think, situation over character, which doesn't usually work for me. I did think the sound, especially in the plane, to be out of this world. I know it won one or two Oscars for that, but I whispered that to my brother during the movie. I did I did.

Oh Wow, last night I went to see They Shall Not Grow Old, the amazing documentary by Peter Jackson, director of Lord of the Rings.

He has ''colorized'' WWI footage, added the voices and made the soldiers come to life in an incredible way.

For Brits, it's being screened on BBC1 tomorrow night, Remembrance Sunday/Armistice Day at 9.30pm, and I think it's going to be available in the States in December.

It is well worth watching!!! (The link above shows some clips, and Peter Jackson talking about the film.)

I'll be looking for it Jayne... As I wandered through the various links related to the clip you posted I came to another review (BBC I think) and it mentioned a poem by Carol Ann Duffy commemorating the WW1 and the last two survivors of that war. It's awesome.

Here it is, read by actor Samantha Morton. The recited poem along with the visuals that accompany the reading made me cry inside.

I was skeptical about this documentary. Peter Jackson managed to ruin one of my favourite childhood films (King Kong) and books (The Hobbit) with his ridiculous bombast. But I watched it on Sunday and it is really extraordinary.

Mark - I just saw Why has Bodhi Dharma left for the East? Then I found this article about the plot and various interpretations. I’m reading it out of curiosity.

I watched "Brief Encounter" again the other night. While it is tough to take seriously the notion two people intensely in love never have sex it is the real deal otherwise. Reminds me a bit of a story by Chekhov. Watched "Babette's Feast" again too. As I grow older I enjoy Dinesen's work. I wouldn't have read it to save my life when I was younger. Fairy tales also.

I don't think it's so important that Peter Jackson did it, but certainly an important piece of work. How just the visuals translate is spectacular. It's interesting to think how, in a hundred years, the record of us will be so much clearer (tho dated in ways we probably can't think of now). Stunning.
