Thanks, Anna

Some of you may remember the survey Anna Evans conducted on women's and men's submission habits. As usual whenever the subject of gender comes up on this site, the discussion thread quickly deteriorated. It did get me thinking about my submission habits, though, and inspired me to retry a few places - including New Walk, which accepted two poems.

So you see, Anna, despite the grumpy reception, your discussion thread made a difference. There's a lesson here: just as women poets shouldn't be easily discouraged from submitting, we shouldn't be easily discouraged from discussing topics of interest to us. Keep raising good questions, and ignore the static. Thanks.

Congratulations on the nice placement, Rose, though I might quibble with the lesson it teaches us.

Maryann Corbett 05-18-2011 09:02 AM

No quibbles from me. Good going, Rose. Good point, too.

Glad to have such good company at Rory's shop, Rose. It isn't often we've appeared side by side in print. And Anna, I was happy to fill out that thought-provoking survey. My most important venues, Hudson Review and Chronicles, are edited by great ladies, Paula Deitz and Catharine Savage Brosman.

Catherine Chandler 05-18-2011 09:58 AM

Well said, Rose. And Congrats on the acceptance.

Ed Shacklee 05-18-2011 02:51 PM

Good for you, Rose.

Way to go, Rose. Who's next?

Adam Elgar 05-19-2011 01:52 AM

Congratulations, Rose! And no dissent from me.

Good for you, Rose. Information is good, and anyone can benefit from re-examining habitual behavior based on new information. I'm glad to hear that the change in strategy paid off for you. I think editors' awareness of scrutiny in these matters can made a difference, too.

Susan

Thanks for the shout out, Rose, though the quality of your work speaks for itself. :)

Cyn Neely 05-19-2011 11:47 PM

I may have to follow your lead Rose, and submit again to some places I had written off for me. Good going and congratulations

Jean L. Kreiling 05-20-2011 08:23 PM

I hope I'm not hijacking the thread by adding a more general thanks to so many of you who have posted submission opportunities, shared your own experiences, and somehow sent the message that one just needs to keep sending 'em in. For me, the result has been more acceptances this year than ever before. Thanks!

Best,
Jean

Congrats, Rose. And three cheers for Anna!

Thanks,

Bill

Well done, Rose! I also appreciated Anna's survey (and wished I could have somehow shunted the results over to the Wom-Po Listserve, where it seems to me the women are always whinging about the shortage of women's work in print, and blaming the editors).
