Market for Light Verse

I've just learned that Miriam Kotzin at the on-line journal Per Contra is looking for light verse. Moreover, she's willing to take work that has been previously published in print journals, and will pay $10 for poems.
I thought the Sphere could help her out. You can send light verse to:
mkotzin@att.net.

Gail White 03-07-2012 06:07 PM

Chris O'Carroll has pointed out that the Per Contra website will tell you submissions are closed. Disregard this & use the e-mail address given above. Just trust me on this, okay?

R. Nemo Hill 03-07-2012 06:12 PM

"Just trust me on this, okay?"
That's a positively adorable remark, Gail.

Nemo

Gail White 03-08-2012 07:53 AM

You're a sweetheart, Nemo.
Chris and I have both got acceptances from PC, so it's for real.

Roger Slater 04-08-2012 06:19 PM

Thanks for the tip, Gail. They just took a few of my light verse poems as well.

Ed Shacklee 04-09-2012 08:44 AM

Acceptances aside, I received a reasonably swift response with a very nice note from the editor, and Per Contra is an attractive looking journal. Here's hoping this becomes a regular feature. Thank you, Gail, for the heads up!

Ed

Susan d.S. 04-23-2012 05:59 PM

Very pleased to let you know 2 poems of mine were accepted as well. Thanks, Gail, for the heads up.

Janice D. Soderling 04-23-2012 06:00 PM

Congratulations Ed and Susan! Way to go.

And Roger also, of course. Sorry, didn't mean to slight you!

Duncan Gillies MacLaurin 04-23-2012 06:05 PM

I've just received an acceptance too. I've never earned a dollar before.

Duncan

Michael Cantor 04-23-2012 06:13 PM

I just got a hit as well. I think this lifts my lifetime income from poetry journals to well over $50.

Jayne Osborn 04-23-2012 08:27 PM

Miriam has accepted one of mine too, that first appeared here :)

Jayne

Janice D. Soderling 04-23-2012 09:19 PM

Michael, Jayne, Duncan. And Gail and Chris.

Looks like this will be a varsity edition.

Susan d.S. 04-24-2012 01:46 AM

A great line-up! With the possible loss of LIGHT, and general dearth of markets, let's hope this becomes a regular feature and one that more periodicals will take up.

Terese Coe 04-24-2012 03:59 AM

Miriam took one of mine as well.

Catherine Chandler 04-24-2012 05:54 AM

I'll be in there, too, with a poem that had the Powwow poets in stitches. ;)

Roger Slater 04-24-2012 01:35 PM

Look at what Gail's kind announcement has wrought! Congratulations to everyone.

Since I've been remiss in donating to the Sphere lately, I plan to do my (too) small part by asking Miriam to send my $40 directly to Alex. If anyone else follows suit, Miriam could combine the payments in a single check.

Duncan Gillies MacLaurin 04-24-2012 01:50 PM

Nice idea, Roger. That's generous of you. I'm in with my ten bucks. My entire American earnings, one could also say.

Duncan

Catherine Chandler 04-24-2012 03:06 PM

Roger,

Upon my acceptance this morning I had asked Miriam to donate my $10 to Alex (Eratosphere). I see you and Duncan have done the same. So, we have $60 so far! Let's see how much more we can collect! :)

Jayne Osborn 04-24-2012 06:06 PM

Alex is very welcome to have my $10 too; it might cost the bulk of that to convert it into £s anyway!

$70 and counting...

Jayne

Ed Shacklee 04-24-2012 07:34 PM

I'm in. $90 and counting.

Roger Slater 04-24-2012 07:49 PM

Miriam now has Alex's address and information, so anyone who's in need only drop Miriam a quick email to let her know.

Jean L. Kreiling 04-24-2012 08:02 PM

What a great idea! I've just e-mailed Miriam asking her to send my earnings to Alex.

Best,
Jean

Susan d.S. 04-25-2012 07:10 AM

Good initiative, Roger. I'm also in for the $20. Susan

Jerome Betts 05-05-2012 07:12 PM

Belatedly folllowing this posse of Pegasuses into Per Contra, I have also requested any fee should be posted Pepplewards. thus swelling the Sphere-supporting swag to . . . I've lost count.

Alex Pepple 05-05-2012 09:25 PM

I saw this thread when it was brand new and hadn't looked in again for a while, until now. In others words, I didn't realize there has been a turn in the last several posts ... so much so for me to say, WOW, you guys & gals! And as overwhelmed with gratitude as I am, all I can say, is thank you one and all for your support!

On the poetry angle though, I want to say that it looks like there will be Spherical invasion of Per Contra's summer issue! As you might know, I don't submit as much as I'd like to, but I jumped onto the bandwagon this time when I saw the thread a while back. And I only found out about the turn in this thread from Miriam Kotzin herself who has just informed me that apart from taking one of the poems I sent her, several of you have asked her to send their honorarium to me. So, altogether, two very good surprises!

And, congratulations to all of you who got accepted!

Cheers,
...Alex

Cyn Neely 05-06-2012 01:50 AM

I am joining the party it seems. Miriam also accepted one of mine.

John Whitworth 05-06-2012 03:46 AM

Cripes! I didn't send her any. Too late?

Alex Pepple 05-06-2012 11:33 AM

John, I think there might be still time because Miriam only sent me an acceptance yesterday ... meaning she's probably still reading.

And congrats, Cyn, and all of you who got accepted!

Cheers,
...Alex

Charlotte Innes 05-06-2012 01:50 PM

I just checked Per Contra. Woe, they are closed to poetry right now--but, hey, open for short fiction!

Huge congrats to all who got accepted there. And how nice to send the honoraria to Alex!

Charlotte

Added in:
I stand corrected! See below! And see first post on thread...

Maryann Corbett 05-06-2012 01:55 PM

Charlotte, check the first post in this thread. Per Contra is closed to poetry subs as a rule--but this is a special situation, and Gail has a special go-ahead from the editor to solicit subs. So I think a light-verse sub is still a go.

Susan McLean 05-06-2012 03:03 PM

Miriam is still accepting light verse. I just submitted today, and she has accepted my "Morbid Interest." I too will ask that the proceeds go to Alex.

Susan

Charlotte Innes 05-06-2012 03:11 PM

Oh, thanks so much, Maryann and Susan, for clarifying and pointing me in the right direction!

Hmmm... Have I written anything at all funny?! Maybe, if Miriam is accepting previously published work... I'll see what I have!

Thanks again,
Charlotte

Mary Moore 05-06-2012 03:39 PM

Sent in three poems 3 minutes ago and 2 minutes ago got a message from the editor that the humor edition is full and submissions are no longer wanted.
Mary

Gail White 05-06-2012 06:51 PM

Mary is right. Miriam Kotzin just sent me an e-mail asking me to tell you that submissions for the Light Verse issue of Per Contra are now closed.

She adds that many fine poems in the LVS came from the Sphere, and she hopes to do light verse again, but is not sure what issue.

Thanks, all.

Cyn Neely 05-07-2012 03:23 PM

And thank you to you, Gail, for pointing us to this opportunity.

Catherine Chandler 05-07-2012 03:34 PM

. . . and Miriam has confirmed that my payment will go to Alex and the Sphere. I imagine everyone else who pledged will also receive a confirmation from Miriam. :)

Cyn Neely 05-07-2012 07:26 PM

I have already given Alex a pretty good donation so I told Miriam to keep her "payment" towards her production costs and she was quite grateful as well. All is to a good cause I say.

Martin Rocek 05-13-2012 07:58 AM

I've donated my $20 as well.

Martin

Golias 05-19-2012 05:37 PM

Miriam is a frequent correspondent of mine these days. I sent her some things I thought not too funny but, well, peculiar, and she has taken at least one of them...a longish spoof. She'll probably be at West Chester. Look her up. A really nice lady.

G.
