John Whitworth's New Book

Hooray for me! This accomplished member has just learned that his new, brilliant book 'Girlie Gangs' now has a real existence. Since I have, perhaps unwisely, bought FIFTY of the things (for flogging) please remember to get your SIGNED copy directly from me. Americans can send illicit dollars and get a discount. Watch this space for details. Oh Quincy, I'll swap one for one of yours. Australians can send THEIR illicit dollars. The only cash I don't take is Euros. Well, would you? Drachs? Why not?

Janice D. Soderling 05-22-2012 02:04 AM

John, why not consider having Paypal payment? It's easy to set up. All you need is an email address and to adjust your pricing to cover the cost.

If this idea appals you, as regards orders from Sweden, I think I have some GBP left from my last trip so will be eagerly waiting details.

Huge congratulations on the new production. Your books are more fun than a barrelful of monkeys.

Jayne Osborn 05-22-2012 02:18 AM

I could take a few to West Chester, John, and let them fight over who gets one! Or maybe I could do a special offer:

"Buy John's, get Jayne's half-price." ;)

John Whitworth 05-22-2012 06:57 AM

Good thinking, both of you. Nothing wrong with Swedish money. You have your own, do you not?

Marybeth Rua-Larsen 05-22-2012 07:49 AM

I'd rather pay you through Paypal, John, than send cash over the pond...but I'll do whatever it takes to get a signed copy. Congrats!

Jayne Osborn 05-22-2012 07:59 AM

Give me half a dozen books to take across the pond, John. I could have an auction.

You've got a gal who's just said she's willing to do anything to get her hands on one - (Ah, but how much would she pay? ;)) I might come back with 100s of $ for you! :D

W.F. Lantry 05-22-2012 08:51 AM

Congrats, John!

John Whitworth 05-22-2012 11:23 AM

I confess I haven't GOT the book. The publisher has. Soon, soon, and I think I have a paypal account.

Ed Shacklee 05-22-2012 12:24 PM

Enough about you, John: I want to talk about me. When (where and how) can I get a copy?

Ed

John Whitworth 05-22-2012 01:08 PM

You can get a copy when I get one, Ed. It's a MARVELLOUS book and well worth waiting for. It ought to win every prize in sight and win me the MBE which is so close to my heart. Or OBE. Or knighthood. Or Baronry. Baron Whitworth of Rough Common. It has a ring to it.

Rick Mullin 05-22-2012 01:10 PM

Congrats John!

Catherine Chandler 05-22-2012 01:55 PM

Congratulations, John!

RCL 05-22-2012 03:15 PM

John, Girlie Gangs resonates for me, having been de-pantsed by one when I was too young and stupid to enjoy it! Looking forward to your humorous take.

Ralph

Bill Carpenter 05-22-2012 04:36 PM

Great news, John. I know I have a treat in store. Bill

Ed Shacklee 05-22-2012 07:12 PM

It is only because they wander around the condo that I can't say if I have a complete collection of Whitworthia or not. I promise you, though -- I will have one before the year is out. Congrats, John. I'm sure Girly Gangs will be as funny as the rest of them. Or funnier.

Best,

Ed

John Whitworth 05-22-2012 08:18 PM

Thank you, Ed. Funnier. Being old's a riot for a start. You really can't take things seriously when you can't run for a bus and you start looking forward to bedtime.

Lance Levens 05-23-2012 03:44 PM

Love the title, Girlie Gangs! I wanna steal it from you--now! That title pretty much sums up my memory of grammar school.

Jayne Osborn 05-23-2012 04:01 PM

Am I going to have to take an extra suitcase with me to West Chester to accommodate signed books for all your US fans, John?

How about, instead of "Buy John's, get Jayne's half price", we make it "Buy John's, get 'ers thrown in"?

Jayne

September 2012?

Jayne Osborn 05-23-2012 04:56 PM

Aw, shucks! We can't wait till 28th September, for heaven's sake! :(

Charlotte Innes 05-23-2012 06:18 PM

Many congrats, John!

The book is here. I am looking at fifty of them. Anybody in the UK who sends me a tenner, or a cheque for a tenner, will get a signed copy by return, post free. Americans need to pony up $20 into my paypal account (which I think converts it into pounds, doesn't it) and they will receive a copy post free. Of course you need to let me know your address.

Mine, for anybody who needs it, is:

20 Lovell Road
Rough Common
Canterbury
Kent CT2 9DG
UK

HOW do you pay into my paypal account? I don't know but I'm trusting that you do or you will tell me what I must do. I gather you need my email. Send me a private message and I'll give it to you.

ACT NOW oh my sisters and my brothers!

STOP PRESS. Jayne, the great and the good Jayne, will have copies at Westchester. All signed. All waiting for your dollars.

Excellent news! I've cancelled my Amazon order that's been hanging around since last year and will get one of Jayne's signed copies.

Seree Zohar 05-31-2012 05:06 AM

congrats, John!

Jayne Osborn 05-31-2012 05:22 AM

Maryann,

One copy's definitely got your name on it :)

I have one that John 'owes' to Quincy for a book swap that's only half-completed till I get there.

The others... not many... are up for grabs, folks! Whoever's first to accost me with $20 will get the much-coveted, signed, latest Whitworth.

There are going to be a few disappointed people who will just have to wait - and it might be a long wait.

[John, I'll blame you if I get mobbed! :p]

How does one put $ into John's Paypal account? The 'Send Money' function says I need to type in his email address. Is that the correct way to do this?

Thanks,

Ed, who is busy painting animals on his cave wall, and will soon learn how to make fire.

Jayne Osborn 05-31-2012 05:35 AM

... and invent the wheel :D

Yes, Ed, that's the way. You'll need John's e-mail address in order to do the PayPal thing. Perhaps a PM to John is the way to get that.

(By the way, I've got nothing but praise for PayPal; for me it's worked swimmingly, both for buying books and for selling them, and it's great for international purchases.)

Jean L. Kreiling 05-31-2012 06:23 AM

I am so tired of reading threads that make me sad I won't be at West Chester--and here's another. I'll be missing an easy way to obtain this book, signed by its illustrious author and distributed by the illustrious Jayne!

Congratulations, John! (Sorry not to meet you, Jayne . . . along with so many others.)

Best,
Jean

Ed Shacklee 06-16-2012 02:11 AM

There's a Girlie Gang in my neighborhood! I hope those who snapped up a copy at West Chester are enjoying it. Even folks who are not poetry lovers love this book, I have found. Perhaps there's still some hope for the Muse.

No one snapped up a copy at West Chester actually, Ed. (Shall I tell them why, John? ... John?)

Oh, I'll just tell you alll anyway! Well, my mate John sent a big bundle of his books to me - but he put my name on the parcel and his niece's address! John's niece lives about 70 miles away from me, but very close to where my brother lives, so I asked my brother if he could go and pick them up for me. He would have done, except the young lady had gone away for a few days; by her return I was already en route for WC - sans books!

So there you have it. Or don't have it, to be more accurate.

Never mind, all those signed copies will be sent out soon to anyone who'd like one. They'll be well (Whit)worth waiting for! :)

Jayne

David Anthony 06-16-2012 01:51 PM

I have a rare unsigned copy of Whitworth's book.
It's genuinely funny, finely-crafted and a delight to read.
There are so many poetry books out at the moment, but you should buy this one.

John Whitworth 06-17-2012 05:39 AM

OK, so if you want this masterpiece here's what you do?

Step 1. You send me a private message with your address
Step 2. I reply, giving you my email address.
Step 3. You pay $20 into my Paypal account.
Step 4. I send you the book, post free.

Wow!

Jean L. Kreiling 06-17-2012 11:37 AM

John--

Signed, yes?

Best,
Jean

John Whitworth 06-17-2012 07:21 PM

If you want it signed I sign it, Jean.

Orwn Acra 06-17-2012 07:44 PM

I get to review it for Angle.

John Whitworth 06-18-2012 12:52 AM

Are Angle getting you a review copy, Orwn?

Orwn Acra 06-19-2012 12:31 PM

I was just going to buy one from you anyway.

John Whitworth 06-19-2012 12:36 PM

Never give up on a free copy, Orwn. I'll send you won (another bribe) and if you get one from Angle you can give it away to someone deserving.

Orwn Acra 06-19-2012 02:27 PM

If you insist. I won't tell anyone.
