I'm in the 500th Ted Kooser's American Life in Poetry column right now, and I don't mind tooting my own horn today. Here's the link:

Beautiful poem.

Lovely poem Elise. Well done you!

Catherine Chandler 10-20-2014 05:20 PM

Elise, I started a congratulatory thread earlier today. Nice work.

Elise Hempel 10-20-2014 06:27 PM

Thank you, Catherine and Ross. A whole year from acceptance to publication in Kooser's column. Isn't that what publishing poetry is all about? -- waiting, waiting, waiting.... The poem was originally published in Rattle's single-parent theme issue.

Elise Hempel 10-20-2014 06:32 PM

Thanks, all. My fifteen minutes (or, rather, a week) of fame. Better than a birthday, and I just turned 55, so I'm late on the scene. Proud to be part of Eratosphere too.

Nice work, Elise!

You should let Tim at Rattle know. He often tweets or posts on Facebook about this sort of thing.

Congrats, Elise! I enjoyed reading it.

Thought I'd add, for the sake of the workshop forum, that this poem was revised many, many times, over many years. I started it when my daughter was around seven, and she's now 19.

Rob Wright 10-21-2014 10:35 AM

Elise,

Stunning poem. And what a great place to read it. Love the last line, wonderful rhythm there and elsewhere. A big hearty congrats.

I felt a lump in my throat at the end of this. Congratulations, Elise -- not just for the fine placement, but for writing the poem.

Best,

Ed

Excellent poem and worth waiting for. Congratulations on being featured in the 500th column. Numbers should not be significant, but somehow they feel that way.

Great poem, great place to be, and REALLY great time to be there. Many congratulations.

Elise Hempel 10-21-2014 07:04 PM

Numbers -- 500th at age 55.... Thanks for all the kind words. And, Maryann, you're a veteran now at American Life in Poetry!

Sharon Fish Mooney 10-21-2014 07:54 PM

Congrats! I like to use Kooser' s picks when I teach workshops and will add yours to my list -- I'll tell them to keep revising.

Elise Hempel 10-22-2014 08:48 AM

Thanks, Sharon. Yes, revise till it hurts!

Janice D. Soderling 10-22-2014 09:41 AM

Yes, I remember this one. Fine work, Elise, and big congratulations.

Charlotte Innes 10-23-2014 11:24 PM

Heart-rending, Elise, and lovely.

Thanks, everyone, for all the kind words. I'll only be famous for the rest of today, before I'm archived....
