Dear Eratosphereans,

We've outgrown our allocated disk space eons ago and the monthly surcharges have been steadily increasing as we keep growing is now past my affordability cut-off point. So, I do have to move Able Muse & the 'Sphere elsewhere!

I've already found another temporary solution - which is another shared server, with hopefully a comparable load time to the present one, but with a little more space and no anticipates surcharges. I've started moving data over there.

Why do you need to know this?

Reason #1: It's quite possible that posts made during the cutover from our current to the new environment might be lost, plus, a blackout period might be necessary to complete the move, plus, there might be a glitch or two during the first few days that I will have to debug & fix.

Reason #2: Our best environment would be a dedicated server, which will give us gigs of extra space, and especially, a noticeable improvement in load time! But that will require sponsorship from Able Musers and 'Sphereans. You will soon be getting a 'fund-drive' email note to this effect, but if you'd rather not wait,
to go to our sponsor pages (which is actually the least visited page in all of Able Muse! (: ) & see if you can do something to fix that.

Cheers,
...Alex

Alex,

I have empty boxes if you need them and a pretty big trunk in the car. I'll bring chips and soda too.

Let me go through my change purse and see what I can do.

diprinzio 03-15-2002 10:56 AM

I tried to donate, this is what I got:
Unable to establish a secure connection to www.ablemuse.com. There is a problem with the security certificate from that site (the identity certificate name is not correct.)

The information you view and send will be readable to others while in transit and it may not go to the intended party.

I'm in San Jose five days a week. I can drop a check in the mail.

Hi Greg,

I have updated the sponsor link with and added Citibank's c2it as an alternative to Paypal. Click here for that link.

You may also donate by snail mail (check payable to Able Muse) at the address indicated at the sponsor page here.

Thanks for helping out!

Cheers,
...Alex

OK, it's time to sound the final alert - I'll complete the transfer of all our oodles of megabytes to the new dedicated server tonight & switch over the domain pointers as well. As I explained at the beginning of this thread, the newest posts might be lost during the cutover period, unless I find it adviseable to close down Eratosphere until change in domain pointers propagate during through the Internet. This can take a day or two since it depends on external factors -- which is why I'm not eager to take the close-it-down approach.

In any event, should you find a newer thread or reply missing after the switchover, you may still access these for a few days hence as follows:
a) if a whole thread is missing:
1- open the corresponding forum
2- replace 'www.ablemuse.com' in your browser URL location with the soon to be old IP address (meaning the one we're currently on): '209.15.66.166' (without the quotes).
b) if a response is missing from a thread:
1- open the thread
2- replace 'www.ablemuse.com' in your browser URL location with the soon to be old IP address: '209.15.66.166' (without the quotes).

.... and you can carry out this replacement kludge with anything else that you find missing, e.g. private messages, downloaded files, ... & if all else fails, drop me a note at staff@ablemuse.com . But I'm hopeful I can complete our cyber move with negligible to no data loss!

Cheers,
...Alex

Curtis Gale Weeks 04-03-2002 02:54 PM

Alex,

"Changing over the domain pointers" is an fairly foreign concept, for me. My biggest question: Will we be directed to the new site when we use the old address, or will there be a new address we should use?

I'm crossing my fingers and clicking my heels already.

Curtis.

Alex Pepple 04-03-2002 05:12 PM

Hi Curtis,

If all goes well - and it should - you won't even know that it happened. In other words, keep on typing exactly what you've been typing so far!

Cheers,
...Alex

Alex, thank you for all the hard work you do for us.

Solan 04-04-2002 12:45 AM

So it's moved now, right? I've been present here for the last few hours when the move supposedly took place, and noticed absolutely nothing. That's smooth!

If you are waiting to have your registration authorized, hang on a little longer while Alex and I figure out how to get back into our inbox, hehehehehe.

Error Alert:

Every time I try to load a page, I get 1, 2, or 3, maybe even sometimes 4, chiming error message popups that inform me "Netscape is unable to locate eratosphere.ablemuse.com - using previously cached copy instead".

Mind you, it then seems to display a new page that certainly cannot have been in my cache before, so I assume this is pertaining only to pieces of the page, or something like that. The address of the page it displays is built like www.ablemuse.com/erato , not like eratosphere.ablemuse.com.

Before I noticed this, I tried going to the numeric url that was posted, 209.15.66.166/index.shtml, and got a "Dear Visitor" page, with a message from Alex about a complete hard drive disk crash, which I eventually noticed was dated 11/27/2000.

Solan 04-05-2002 08:23 PM

This time many posts are missing. Luckily, I kept a back-up copy of some just in case, so I'll re-post those when things have stabilized. Examples: This thread, where one of your posts is missing, Alex. Another, where I have a back-up: http://www.ablemuse.com/erato/ubbhtml/Forum3/HTML/000228.html where my reply to Richard and Alicia has gone astray.

Another curious thing: I use Opera for Mac, and the progress bar states that the window keeps loading, even though it seems very much to have finished doing so.

But yes: Pages load a lot faster at this side of the Atlantic than they did before the move.

Alex

Congrats on the successful move!

Now how I wish that pale blue translucent notice with the yellow margins would get out of the way! The one that says it will self-destruct in a day or so.

Nigel Holt 04-06-2002 12:57 AM

Great to see the 'sphere back to its usual shape. I do notice an improvement in load times here, but I'm more delighted that everything's up and running again.

On yellow notices that 'will self-destruct' - can't you give them a helping hand into oblivion? Alex? Carol?

Clive Watkins 04-06-2002 03:33 AM

Dear Alex

Congratulations on the move!

I have encountered one problem, however, which may be nothing to do with the change of address. Trying to send a private message, I repeatedly got the following error message:

Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, and inform them of the time the error occurred and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

All the best!

Clive Watkins

Nigel Holt 04-06-2002 04:54 AM

There's also an internal server error warning on the poll voting, too.

Nigel

Alex Pepple 04-07-2002 01:29 AM

Thanks everyone for your input! I'd been working frantically behind the scene to resolve all the baffling problems that I could see and have just come up for air to see what problems you were all having. Luckily, it seems that I was working on those problems that you mention here -- private message, internal server error... so, everything should be back to normal now. If not, please post it here.

By the way, Svein, I have recovered that missing reply, so it should be part of that thread now. And it's good news to hear that it's loading faster as expected.

Thank you everyone for your patience & for hanging when the 'Sphere kept slipping on its axis. Well, we're back in the grove ... see? no yellow notice! :)

Cheers,
...Alex

Hi Alex,
I got this when I tried to view "who's online":

an error has occurred in the script on this page
line: 86
char: 15
error: object expected
code: 0
url: http://www.ablemuse.com/erato/online.cgi

Alex Pepple 04-07-2002 11:55 AM

Clive - thanks!

Sharon - I just checked that feature & it works fine for me. Is anyone else having problems with Who's Online?

...Alex

Robt_Ward 04-07-2002 01:32 PM

I'm back, and it works fine for me. Good job!

Solan 04-08-2002 12:13 AM

Good work, Alex, and thank you for bringing back my reply on Åse-Marie Nesse. I am privileged (or cursed?) to read this forum from both a Mac and a PC, and I use different browsers. I have had no problem with reading Who's Online. Sharon, which browser and operating system do you use?

Alex,

I keep getting this error message whenever I try to access artemesia's poem, verdant youth, on FVI:

Parse error: parse error in /var/www/vhosts/ablemuse.com/httpdocs/erato/ubbhtml/Forum2/HTML/001812.html on line 320

Curtis.

Nigel Holt 04-24-2002 05:05 PM

Alex,

Also a problem that existed on the old site which hasn't changed - when on 'Who's Online' and you click the link for 'Active Topics', it gives an internal server error message - this has never worked to my knowledge.

Nigel

Alex Pepple 04-26-2002 04:18 AM

Curtis - that thread has been fixed. The poster put coded some bad HTML which the system couldn't figure out & I have corrected.

Nigel - Thanks for the bug report. I'll look into it the first chance I get.

Cheers,
...Alex
