Deep End Posts of Poets Past

I will post to the Deep End, just as soon as I qualify, not with any degree of self-worth or evaluation but to honor the spirits of Murphy, Sullivan, Kenny ,Golias, Beaton, Stallings and more who knew what this great place entailed and meant.

Not for them the whimpering coyness of tendering to a forum that allowed, indeed encouraged, a remedial, anodized, cosseting critique safe from the visceral dissemination of an EFH.

This hallowed place is empty, a forlorn echo remains, a poor remnant of the talent and integrity that prevailed. It was tough at times, and many left with their tails drooping, but good poets stayed and became better poets for all of it.

What Mezey, Wilbur, Kennedy, Kerrigan, Steele, Davis and so many other luminaries come here now.? Where is the Murphy to bring them?

What point a Shallow End as someone suggested? It’s there a already.

It is a strange inversion of principle and dereliction of a fine resource to post all to a forum where a genteel reception is advertised and enjoyed.

Alan was the tyrant of the Deep End, but many poets appreciated his tyranny. He would turn his army, and his money, and his children and his slaves (many for the express purpose of having him murdered), to the service of his wife, while he pretended to be in love with her. Many poets of the age despised and ridiculed him; he was despised by poets of high repute, for not being a tyrant. The most eloquent of them wrote the following poem against him: "He called me mad and a thief; yet if all men were to know that I am a great genius, and, through the exercise of my genius, gain a good title, he would never want one upon his brow." In the poem he referred to the Emperor Nero's words concerning his greatness: "To know him is to know him, and to be worthy of him is the greatest part, if you ask for it."

Misses the point.

No point was made.

Hmmmm, so are the rather empty, unhelpful critiques you've been posting part of the bit, then?

Sean Shinawill 05-15-2019 02:25 PM

And therein lies my point- there’s nothing in the Deep End to be critiqued.

Whimpering coyness? How very dare you!

I for one look forward to seeing your work. However, we are who we are and our opinions will probably be just the same as if you'd posted in the Other Place. How will you know?

And when you do start posting, how shall we respond to you? Are you Sean or Jim? And were you in Drakelands when they closed the tungsten mine?

Welcome to our gathering of unworthy scribblers, Sean. Thank goodness you are here to insult us out of our own mediocrity! I've been aching for a really thorough editorial reaming. It's so cathartic. Like a colonic cleanse. Or semi-colonic, anyway.

Alas, I have a personal policy of not profaning The Deep End by setting foot (or dipping toe) in its holy waters, so I won't be able to gaze in wonder and adulation upon whatever work of breathtaking artistic magnificence you are about to bestow upon us there. My loss.

Sean Shinawill 05-15-2019 02:57 PM

Ann, you may well be right, but we will find out.
Right now I am just concerned that a form of poetic Marxist/socialism prevails wherein all submissions are attracted to a sandbox.

Call me Jim.
No mines I fear, just me and the geese.

Hi.

The relative inactivity of the Deep End has been alternately mourned, debated, fretted over and dismissed as nothing to worry about for far longer than I've been a member here. It probably isn't going to change any time soon, though who knows? Meanwhile, feel free to critique the poems in met and non-met just as you would were they in TDE. We can take it.

I do think that 'This hallowed place is empty, a forlorn echo remains, a poor remnant of the talent and integrity that prevailed' is a fairly odd way to describe a club which you became a member of three days ago. Bluster impresses nobody. I sincerely hope your poems are worth it.

All the best

Mark
