Short Play to be Staged
Hi Friends--
I just learned that my short (really short) play, "Rerun," has been selected for the 2019 iteration of Santa Cruz's venerable 8 Tens at 8 Festival. As the title indicates, the plays (there are 16, in fact; two sets of 8 performed in repertory) are all 10 minutes or shorter. They take submissions each year, by the way, through the end of June (for a modest fee). Apparently I'll be hearing from "my director" soon... If you're near Santa Cruz in January or February, 2019, please consider checking it out! Very excited, --Simon |
Simon, what a wonderful post to begin my day. Bravo, congratulations! May your stage be strewn with roses.
Best, Jennifer |
That's exciting news, Simon. I hope you love what the director and cast do with your script.
|
Thanks, Guys. Oooh, roses. And, Chris, I hope so, too--but if not, at least it'll be over in 10 minutes. Actually, it will be exciting to see what they do with it...
|
Congratulations, Simon! That's a well-thought-of festival.

Wonderful news, Simon.
When J.D. (our John) Smith had a short play staged in London, he came over with his wife, and I met them at the theatre with my friend; we watched the performance together and it was great. Sadly I can't do the same thing in reverse and come to Santa Cruz, but you can tell us all about it. You must, in fact! Congratulations :) Jayne |
Congratulations, Simon. I hope you like what the director and actors do with your play. It is fascinating to have one's work interpreted in a different format. I was lucky enough to hear a couple of my poems set to music in the past year, and relinquishing control to someone else (both composers cut and slightly changed the poems) was worth it in order to see the unexpected new things the music brought to the words.

Hey!!
Nice one. Very exciting! |
Thanks, everybody!

Great to hear!
A lot can happen in 10 minutes that can’t happen in 20 : ) Are you acting in it as well? |
Thanks, Jim. No, I'm not much of an actor--but this is an interesting notion, not least because my little play is more than a tad autobiographical (but not completely so...). It would be fun to play the "other guy," but I'm way too old for either part.
Auditions are early September, btw, which I mention just in case any Santa Cruz-area actors are reading this... |
Way to go, Simon! If I were only in the area, I would be in the audience.
|
Sorry for the bump (not sorry), but this is opening tonight! There is an A set of plays tonight and a B set (including mine) tomorrow (i.e. Fri 1/4 and Sat 1/5, respectively).
Actors' Theatre Co. Center Stage Theatre in Downtown Santa Cruz, CA I'm supposed to be there but won't be there tonight due to a family circumstance. Will try hard to get there tomorrow for my own 10 minutes of glory, but we'll see. If I miss it and any Eratosphere members get there, please tell me how great it was (suggestion: very great indeed). Cheers, --Simon |
Best break-a-leg wishes to your cast. If the script is as good as the best poems in Lesser Magi, you could have a hit on your hands.
|
What an astonishingly kind thing to say, Chris. Thank you. For reasons I can't post much about (am fine--family member's illness...), I am increasingly unlikely to see the play. But I have spies on the ground to report to me...
|
I hope your spies have a hidden camera, Simon!
Seriously, though, it's great to hear of successes like this... and I hope your relative makes a speedy recovery. I'd love to see your play... and with Chris in the lead role. (Did you know he's an actor?) Jayne |
Congratulations, Simon! I wish you great actors and a happy audience.
Cheers, John |
Made it! Loved it! Back on the road...
|
Congratulations. Wish I could see it.
