The Fall of Britain!
The Emperor Claudius is totally going to conquer Britain in my Roman history lecture today: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_...s.43.to.84.jpg

We like to call it a foreign investment in infrastructure.

Claudius had it handed to him on a plate. You need to read my chapter on Caerleon (and Legion II Augusta) in "Real Newport".
Mind you, I gleaned most of my information on Claudius from a lecture I attended, during which I was sitting behind the speaker so could hear better than I could see. He elaborated on his contention that the "invasion" was based on an actual consensus of would-be client kings and I learned that Claudius had been guided up the English Channel by acrobatic pirates. I wrote a poem (in hendecasyllabics) about that. I later learned that he had actually said "Atrebatic pilots" but the disappointment was so great that I chose to ignore the new information. |
How could anyone resist this thread title? Not I for one. Consequence: learning about acrobatic pilots. My knowledge of Claudius is restricted to Robert Graves and the resulting miniseries, starring I think Derek Jacobi.

"Acrobatic pirates" are way better than "Atrebatic pilots," Anne. I would love to see your poem.
Yes, Colchester was once the capital of Britannia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colchester Hey, John, I love "I, Claudius." Poor Claudius. All those wives. |
He was an uxorious emperor.

Of course not, David. Who suggested they did? The Romans made both of them. With the collusion of the acrobatic pirates. (I PM'd you the poem, Aaron.)

I do know where I've seen acrobatic pirates - The Pirates of Penzance, "With Catlike Tread"!

Don't worry, Britons. Now that we are under Nero, your native queen Boudica will revolt at the prompting of the Druids. She is hot (and pissed off): https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl...QEwCg..i&w=345
