Makiki

This is an unfinished piece from 1982. Acrylic on Canvas.

Recently I have been looking over my older work and considering what to do with it. This one has a tear in it too. (next to the bottom, center red lion on the beadspread)

The problem is, I want to finish it but I don't want to touch it. My children got a bit upset at the suggestion of my finishing it, having lived with this piece all their lives. Then my niece had the idea of having it scanned and printed onto canvas. This way I could have my painting and paint it too. Any thoughts? Will it still be a valid piece of art if I am working on a reprint?

Sharon,

No matter what you do to or with the painting, it is your work. You decide how many copies you want of it and what to do to each copy, and each copy is a valid piece of art. You can duplicate it and alter it in any way at all. Printed on canvas, paper, whatever and painted with acrylic or something else entirely, each copy is still your original work of art, variation on the theme.

It looks 'finished' whatever that means.
Your pointillist painting looked finished too.
Your children are right, don't touch it. If the tear is really bad take it to a restorer.
