Sam Gwynn - Hurricane Harvey

Sam Gwynn lives in Beaumont, Texas, which is painfully close to Hurricane Harvey's path. Best wishes and prayers for Sam and his family, and to any other Spherians affected by the hurricane.

His latest Facebook post reads: Just so everyone knows, Beaumont is 270 mi. from Rockport and 90 mi. east of Houston. There are few areas in Beaumont subject to flooding, and there were substantial drainage projects completed after Rita and Ike, in 2005 and 2008, respectively.

I looked because I was worried and was reassured by that. Other Spherians - are you safe? We are thinking of you.

Katie Hoerth has posted that she's safe. In the Rio Grande Valley, we've not even had rain. But the East Coast has been hit pretty hard.

Cheers,
John

Our old friend Mike Alexander from Sonnet Central has also reported on Facebook that he's safe.

Our heads are soggy but unbowed. Parts of Houston are a real disaster, a repetition that's becoming all too familiar there. However, bear in mind that Greater Houston is larger than New Jersey and that the media are highly selective in what they can show; obviously there are large parts of the area that are experiencing great difficulty, but there is no reason to show the parts that aren't. Here are some of the highway webcams.

So far so good~~happy to hear Sam and fam and others are ok.

The danger is not past, though, according to this update from the NY Times (and other news):

Thanks for the good news, Sam. These storms are "varium et mutabile" -- ULL (in Lafayette) canceled classes early this morning, and the afternoon has been beautiful! However, there may yet be tropical storm force winds tomorrow. The bayou is way up, but nothing like the unnamed flood of 2016.

Also keeping my dear friend Jennifer Reeser in my thoughts and prayers as the rains continue in Louisiana.

Gail White 08-30-2017 07:23 AM

Catherine - yes indeed! Jennifer reports having had a tornado scare, but it passed and she is okay so far.

And radar shows Harvey right over Beaumont this morning, so Sam is getting more rain -- keep the good thoughts going towards Texas.

Catherine Chandler 08-30-2017 10:22 AM

Beaumont is being battered right now. Hoping Sam and his loved ones are safe.
