The City of San Francisco is seeking a new Poet Laureate. I hereby nominate the estimable poet, Dana Gioia. Of course, he happens to be Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, right now. On the upside, he is a native Californian with deep Bay Area roots, and he knows the value of a buck.
Alternatively, there is Thomas Newton. --Matt Rosenberg, rosenberg.com |
I nominate Grace Slick, and I would force the little children to memorize "rejoyce" and "White Rabbit" in literature class. On the upside, I would ban the playing of "We Built This City On Rock 'n' Roll" from the airwaves forever.

Robert,
Of course the nomination is facetious, but it is interesting that in choosing the top 2 conservative poets for the San Francisco Poet Laureate that they would be Dana Gioia and Thomas Newton. rosenblog.com |
Kay Ryan!

Never having heard of Kay Ryan, I did a Google search and found her at the Dana Gioia Online website and I also found a reference to R. S. Gwynn and this quote, “No American poet of his generation has written better sonnets, …” I was impressed. Congratulations Sam.
