Translation Awards?
The marketing people at the university press for my next book have sent me a detailed list of questions to fill out on short notice (after having sat on the manuscript for more than four years...).
One question I could use some help on is: what are the awards for poetry translation? Other than the Barnstone, which would only work for an excerpt, I am not specifically aware of others, but I have a vague recollection that they exist. This book is from seventh century Latin, so that would thin it down, but to help other translators I would not mind if you added awards for which my book would be ineligible. Thanks! |
Here are a couple of prizes that a translation of a classical work might win:
Academy of American Poets, The Harold Morton Landon Translation Award PEN Center USA Translation Award Susan |
There is one called the Best Translated Book Award for both poetry and fiction (details on Wikipedia).
|
The Cliff Becker Book Prize in Translation
and also the Raiziss/de Palchi Translation Awards. (Note that the 2004 winner is someone we know :) ) |
It's good to know about the Cliff Becker one. Thanks, Maryann.
Here's another one: National Translation Award American Literary Translators Association University of Texas at Dallas Box 830688 (JO 51) Richardson, TX 75083-0688 And some others--not sure which of these are still valid, but a quick internet search would clear that up: John Florio Prize, from The Translators Association, 84 Drayton Gardens, London SW10 9SD, England (December 31 deadline; biennial) Lewis Galantière prize (biennial), from the American Translators Association, 1735 Jefferson Davis Highway, Suite 903, Arlington, VA 22202-3413 (given in even-numbered years to book published within previous two years) If you’re feeling really energetic, you might query these organizations about prizes (again, I’ve had these addresses for a while, so they may need to be updated): International Federation of Translators (Fédération Internationale des Traducteurs, FIT), Heiveldstraat 245, B-9110 Ghent, Belgium Literary Translators Association, 3825 Lacombe, Montreal, Quebec PQ H3T lM3, Canada The Translators Association, 84 Drayton Gardens, London SW10 9SD, England British Centre for Literary Translation, School of Language, Linguistics and Translation Studies University of East Anglia, Norwich NR4 7TJ, England Good luck, Mike. The detail about four years of waiting, only to be given a task that needs to be done pronto, sounds painfully familiar. |
That's exceptionally helpful!
Thanks so much. |
