A certain lack of polish can be an occupational hazard with ripped-from-the-headlines poems for New Verse News. Sometimes I manage tight, graceful pieces there -- that's my story and I'm sticking to it -- but often enough I’ll publish stuff that’s still, ahem, a little rough.
The jauntiness of a Broadway show tune and the dead seriousness of white American racism -- that's a winning combination. But anybody who thinks I didn't realize the full potential of such material, you get no argument from me. The poem puts on an OK show, but I'd say its yeeowing and ayipping don't add up to the real star turn of a first-rate song parody.
