I thought he was saying that the appliances using less water are a waste of water because he has to flush more than once to achieve clearance. And that since so much water is theoretically available in more rainful places, he has a right to take more of it than the climate-conscious restrictions allow.

I'm not quite sure if that's what you're saying, Ralph. I thought that an Andy Gump, almost by definition, restricts the amount of flushwater, so does not the Orange One require more "sump"?

He is right about the lightbulbs, though...

New Lamps for Old

I loved the little sunrise in the lamps
that blossomed slowly, from a peachy blush
to a coy eyelash-flutter that resolved
into a honey-coloured promise. “There –
I’m here, as ever, stay a while and watch
and all the day’s harsh monsters will be hushed
to golden shadows.”

They took away the lamps; now there are lights
that leap out fully-formed from the curved brows
of daytime perches for the local crows.
Off. On. A hard white suddenly arrives
like frozen lightning. Bingo. Just like that.
No little cough, no quiet by-your-leave,
an elbowed entry and a brutish shrug.

Oh, light-emitting diodes – yes, I know
you cost less and you save the sanctity
of all God’s stars, but some of us will grieve
a little for the loss of sodium.
Lili Marlene, alas, the well-earned lines
of all that life, indifferently lived,
laugh at your brave attempts to hide their havoc
from him for whom you wait.
