Dirigible Balloon

Dirigible Balloon, the children's poetry magazine that Roger Slater recently brought to our attention, has two poems of mine -- "Sunset" and "My Bed" -- in their Latest Poems section.

Julie Steiner and Robert Schechter also have poems there, and I apologize to anyone here I'm failing to mention.

These poems are delightfully clear-headed and even light-headed in the best way possible. When writing poetry it is never a mistake to think of your audience as being a child — A thoughtful, whimsy-driven child. I try to be.

Congratulations Chris, Robert and Julie.

One of the fun things about DB is the way they give an audio file for each poem, which they make easy by offering to have someone else read it if you prefer. For me it's always a kick to hear someone else read my poems, since by the time they are publishable I'm generally sick of my own voice, and when the poems are read, as in my case, by a woman with a British accent, they almost seem new to me. I see that Chris chose to let Jonathan read his poems, even though Chris is a performer who can read them as well as anyone, but somehow the jolly British accent (along with changing "my" to "me") gave them a new dimension.

Anyway, I would encourage more of you to submit to DB. They seem to be publishing at quite a fast rate, something like 40 poems a month, so there's plenty of room, and they respond quickly. It's always been a goal of mine to try to get more "adult" poets to dip their toes in children's verse. Try it. You'll like it.

Congratulations! All are lovely - and so nicely presented, too. What a lovely website and idea. I'll share with my edu networks. It's a gorgeous resource.

Congratulations Chris, Bob and Julie (with special thanks to Bob for sharing the info about DB in the first place).

I'm going to break with tradition and send something "out there", as I have some children's poems that only had the odd outing when I visited a few schools years ago.

Jayne
