Found a home for Shevchenko's "Testament" in English
My translation of Taras Shevchenko's "Testament"/"Заповіт", easily one of the most famous and universally known poems in Ukrainian, has found a home with the EastWest Literary Forum in the 'Poets of Ukraine' series
(I went ahead and posted a reading of it in Ukrainian on my soundcloud) |
Moving and timely. Thank you for translating, and posting, it.

Timely indeed! And well rendered.
And it's good to remember that not only was Shevchenko born into serfdom, he also lived in a nation - Ukraine - that like Poland spent the Nineteenth Century absent from the map, being entirely occupied by Russia. It seems no coincidence that these lines - Stand and water freedom with Blood from tyrant veins - directly echo the Marseillaise: "Qu'un sang impur / Abreuve nos sillons." Cheers, John |
Timely indeed. Congratulations!
