sponsored poetry (Language in Thought and Action)
I've recently stumbled on S.I. Hayakwaa's Language in Thought and Action, a book some of you here have likely known for a while.
In his chapter on poetry, he calls advertising "sponsored poetry," and claims that its ubiquity not only explains but requires both the negativity and obscurity of (unsponsored) modern poetry (fifth edition, 1990: Eliot, Pound, Stevens Schwartz, Lowell, Plath). Quote:
